Take your networking to build actual relationships

Too many job seekers miss the mark on what networking is all about. You have heard over and over that networking is about building relationships with people who can provide you with information, advice and contacts to help you find the right role in your job search. The trick is to focus on the long-term endgame; meaning that you should concentrate on building the relationships first, so that your contacts will be more inclined to help you meet new, useful connections or inform you of positions that become open before they are advertised. Jacks-Of-All-Trades Do Not Get Interviews Because…

As a career coach, I get a lot of emails that go something like this:

Dear J.T.,

I lost my job after working for more than ____ years at the same company. In that time, I had a variety of responsibilities. I worked in a half-dozen departments. As the company changed, I would take on new projects as needed. I was a “Jack-of-all-trades.”

I thought when I lost my job I’d find it easy to get a new one because of all I have done. I’ve got so many skills and abilities, my resume is three pages long. And yet, I can’t seem to get an interview. As I research positions on job boards, I find myself saying, “I can do that!” But, having applied to over 40 jobs, I’ve yet to get a single interview. Five Minutes to a Better Job Search in 2014

Searching for a job and an attainable New Year’s resolution? The perfect job search resolution can be completed in just five minutes.

The single best job search action you can take in 2014 is this: e-mail someone who has your target job and request a phone call to discuss what he/she’s learned while at that job. That’s it.

Your gut reaction to this is probably skepticism, which is entirely fair.

I see thousands of new job-seeking students every year between my full-time job as a career coach at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and my visits to universities worldwide to address this same topic, and the reaction is always the same: “Nobody wants to help you find a job.”
