SAN: The next step up from LANs

It’s sometimes called the “network behind the servers,” but it is definitely the layer of networking adopted by enterprises that need more than a LAN: the storage area network (SAN).

Basically, a LAN, for all its advantages, is too limited in scope for larger enterprises with far-ranging IT operations. LANs allow file access and sharing between servers, workstations, and peripherals in the same environment, both physical (i.e., in the same building) and logical (i.e., the same or compatible operating system).
